YeeHaw Junction 2013 - Preview

Music begins at the YeeHaw Junction Bluegrass Festival on Thursday, January 24 and runs through Saturday evening the 26, with a full lineup of fine bluegrass bands offering the best in bluegrass entertainment for the nineteenth year.  But the fun begins on Sunday the 20th as the bluegrass community begins to come together once again for a week spent in what only a few days earlier was a cow pasture. As people arrive to greet old friends and make new ones, jams break out, a mobile feast begins to occur, and the movable bluegrass community begins to celebrate. Hosts Keith and Darlene serve as congenial hosts while a small army of volunteers works hard to make it all work smoothly. We particularly enjoy the days on site leading to the music's kickoff on Thursday as a good time to visit with the many friends we've made out on the road.

The Lineup

This year's lineup features no repeats from last year except for host band Keith Bass & the Florida Bluegrass Express. It is strong without being spectacular, offering solid bluegrass bands, plenty of good songwriting, and a variety of strong traditional bluegrass with more than a hint of the slightly progressive. Headliners Nothin' Fancy and Junior Sisk are sharply contrasting bands, and the rest of the lineup offers variety. Newcomers Cumberland Gap Connection, which we first saw in Tazewell, TN opening for Grasstowne.  They've continued to improve and work at a solid traditional sound. Still-House, much strengthened by the addition of Chris Harris as lead vocalist and on mandolin is informed by its former association with Larry Cordle and Carry Hassler. They're distinctly a band to watch as they continue to develop. Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road have seen much recent success since signing with Rural Rhythm Records.  The Roys, an engaging brother/sister duo, have attracted a good deal of attention lately and become seasoned through a solid eighteen months of hard touring. Both Cody Shuler & Pine Mountain Railroad and the Hagar's Mountain Boys have seen significant changes through the past couple of years. Jerry Butler remains one of best vocalists around, and his band has been stable for a significant period of time, leading to new tightness.  All-in-all, attendees at YeeHaw Junction can look forward to a strong musical experience, as well as having plenty of opportunity to make its own music in the field.

Discount tickets are available until January 18th and can be ordered here.  Electric hookups are already sold out, but you can get on the list in case any become available. Almost unlimited rough camping is available on the grounds with hot showers available at a small fee and water from a truck.  You should arrive with full tanks and larders, remembering that the nearest serious shopping is thirty miles away in either direction, Vero Beach or Lake Wales.
